La Lettura: Visual Data

While being part of DensityDesign, I had the opportunity to collaborate with Corriere della Sera, one of the most popular Italian newspapers. With the weekly page “Nuovi Linguaggi” we tried to explore and communicate the most disparate phenomena trough data visualization.

The topics to be visualized have been decided together with La Lettura (Corriere della Sera's Sunday supplement) editorial staff, then DensityDesign took care of the data retrieval, analysis and visualization.

— Geopolitica della condivisione (Mario Porpora, Valerio Pellegrini, Giorgio Caviglia).

As for many of the topics structured data don’t really exist, most of the datasets have been retrieved from the Web: partly with automatic methods, partly manually. For each page we created an original solution, taking advantage of many different tools such as semantic analysis and network theory: a process which also reflected DensityDesign work method, that focuses not just on the visualization side but on structuring and shaping complex phenomena.

The project won the Bronze prize at Malofiej 20 (2012) in the Features category and the Silver prize at Malofiej 21 (2013) in the Portfolio category.

I have curated several issues.

Nella rete del grande illuminista (Valerio pellegrini, Giorgio Caviglia, Azzurra Pini). In collaboration with Mapping the Republic of Letters project.

— Quanto sono neri i colori di Pollock (Matteo Azzi, Giorgio Caviglia, Michele Mauri).

— Il meticciato è spirituale (Giorgio Caviglia, Federica Bardelli, Gabriele Colombo, Carlo De Gaetano).

— Il giaguaro che faceva le fusa (Giorgio Caviglia, Michele Mauri, Giorgio Uboldi, Valerio Pellegrini).

— I segreti del libro stregato (Federica Bardelli, Gabriele Colombo, Carlo De Gaetano, Giorgio Caviglia).

My Role in This Project

I have curated several issues and contributed to others, to collect, manipulate and visualize data.

This project won two Silver and one Bronze medal at the Malofiej International Infographic Awards in 2012 and 2013.

Many of the visualizations have also been featured in the exhibition Le mappe del sapere at Triennale di Milano (Milan, Italy) in 2014.
